Elizabeth Beyer

Cardinal News has hired Elizabeth Beyer as our new Richmond-based state politics and government reporter.

Beyer comes to Cardinal News from the USA Today Network, where she worked as the 2024 elections and politics reporting fellow in Virginia for the past 11 months. Before USA Today, she reported for the Wisconsin State Journal for three years, where she covered K-12 education during the COVID-19 pandemic amid the politicization of public schools, and at the La Crosse Tribune for one year, where she covered issues faced by rural communities and family farms in southwestern Wisconsin. She graduated with her master’s degree from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism in 2018. She received her bachelor’s degree from Columbia College Chicago after transferring from Columbus State Community College.

Cardinal is the only news organization west of Richmond with a full-time reporter based in the state capital.

Elizabeth can be reached at elizabeth@cardinalnews.org or 1-614-499-1434.

“Beth brings investigative skills to Cardinal that will benefit our wide readership,” said Cardinal Executive Editor Jeff Schwaner. “She can grasp the slippery numbers of campaign financing, and she can show the local impact of internecine party conflict on a community’s citizens. Beth will be able to take what’s happening in Richmond and tell Cardinal readers what it means for them and their hometowns.”

Cardinal now has nine full-time reporters to give the communities in Cardinal’s footprint the type of journalism they deserve. It was made possible through the support of Cardinal’s readers.
