State champions crowned

Updated June 13

The winningest boys soccer program in VHSL history added a 14th state championship, while two other River Ridge District teams claimed the big trophy for the first time Saturday and a Roanoke Valley school finished off a four-peat.

Blacksburg is VHSL soccer royalty, but the Bruins had a seven-year drought between titles before they stopped Charlottesville for a 4-1 victory at Woodgrove High in Purcellville.

Blacksburg scored 15 goals in three state tournament games and finished the 2026 season 24-0.

With more than 600 career victories, Shelley Blumenthal has coached Blacksburg to all 14 championships (1989, ’93, ’95, ’98, ’99, 2000, ’02, ’05, ’07, ’09, ’10, ’13, ’18 and ’26).

Meanwhile, Christiansburg’s boys and Cave Spring’s girls made history by claiming their first soccer state championships with wins at Emory & Henry University.

Cave Spring’s girls capped an unbeaten season at 23-0-1 with their 12th consecutive shutout win as the Knights edged defending champion Western Albemarle 4-3 on penalty kicks in a shootout. The victory avenged a 2-0 loss to the Warriors in last year’s final.

Cave Spring allowed just three goals all season.

Christiansburg’s boys posted a 4-2 victory over Brentsville for their first state soccer title, finishing 17-4-1.

Glenvar placed its boys and girls teams in Class 2 state finals Saturday at Roanoke College.

The Highlanders captured their fourth boys championship in a row with a 4-1 victory over Clarke County.

Glenvar came up just short in the girls final as Nelson County deflected the final attempt in a shootout as the Governors defeated the Highlanders 3-2 in penalty kicks following two scoreless halves and the overtime periods.

Galax sought its eighth boys championship but defending champion Northampton had all the answers in a 6-0 victory over the Maroon Tide at Glenvar High.

Elsewhere in VHSL soccer finals, the winners Saturday were Westfield (Class 6 boys), Independence (Class 6 girls), Floyd Kellam (Class 5 boys and girls) and Atlee (Class 4 girls).

Six soccer teams from Roanoke and New River valleys advance to state title games

Updated June 11

The World Cup is not the only tournament creating a soccer buzz.

Six high school teams from the Roanoke and New River valleys — including three which are undefeated — won semifinal games Friday to move within one step of VHSL a state championship.

Blacksburg’s boys (Class 4), Cave Spring’s girls (Class 3) and Glenvar’s boys (Class 2) are one win away from capping unbeaten seasons in Saturday’s finals around the state. Christiansburg’s boys (Class 3), Glenvar’s girls (Class 2) and Galax’s boys (Class 1) also will play in state finals.

Blacksburg improved to 23-0 with a 4-0 victory over Atlee High of Mechanicsville in its semifinal at Woodgrove High School in Loudoun County. The Bruins will look to add to their VHSL record of 13 state boys soccer championships in Saturday’s final against Charlottesville.

Blacksburg defeated Charlottesville 3-0 in the Region 4A final.

Cave Spring’s girls (22-0-1) by recording their 11th consecutive shutout in a 2-0 triumph over William Monroe High of Stanardsville in a semifinal at Emory & Henry University. The Knights’ opponent in Saturday’s 11 a.m. final will be Western Albemarle, a 4-1 semifinal winner over Kettle Run. Western Albemarle is unbeaten against VHSL competition this year with the only loss to Collegiate School of Richmond.

The championship game is a rematch of the 2025 state final that resulted in a 2-0 Western Albemarle victory.

Glenvar’s boys (21-0-1) will be gunning for their fourth Class 2 championship in a row Saturday at Roanoke College after defeating Bruton High of Williamsburg on Friday. Regulation and overtime play ended in a 1-1 draw before the Highlanders prevailed 5-4 on penalty kicks in a shootout.

Glenvar will play Clarke County, a 3-0 winner over Appomattox County, in Saturday’s final.

Glenvar’s girls also will line up for a shot at their third VHSL title in four years following Friday’s 4-2 semifinal win over Central of Woodstock. The Highlanders will see a familiar foe Saturday in Nelson County, which defeated them 3-0 in the 2025 state championship game. Nelson ousted Clarke County 3-0 on Friday.

Christiansburg reached its first boys soccer final with a 2-0 win over Meridian High of Falls Church at Emory & Henry. The Blue Demons will play Saturday against Brentsville, which prevailed 3-2 over Liberty Christian on a ‘golden goal’ in overtime.

Galax will be seeking its eighth VHSL boys soccer championship since 2014. The Maroon Tide took a 6-0 victory over Rappahannock and will face Northampton High from the Eastern Shore in Saturday’s final at Glenvar High School. Northampton advanced with a 5-1 decision over Auburn.

Other VHSL state finals Saturday are Westfield vs. James Madison (Class 6 boys), Floyd Kellam vs. Lightridge (Class 5 boys), Independence vs. Yorktown (Class 6 girls), Kellam vs. Kempsville (Class 5 girls) and Atlee vs. Heritage of Leesburg (Class 4 girls).
