Wells Fargo will lay off 87 employees from its Roanoke County customer service facility in three phases by the end of the year, according to letters recently sent to local and state officials.

The letters were dated Sept. 29, Oct. 13 and Oct. 27 and were posted on the stateโ€™s layoffs notification website in the past week.

Sixty employees will be terminated on Nov. 28, six on Dec. 12 and 21 on Dec. 26, according to the letters. Based on job titles listed in the companyโ€™s letters, the cuts primarily affect Wells Fargoโ€™s fraud and claims operations.

โ€œWe regularly review and adjust our staffing levels to meet the needs of our business,โ€ the San Francisco-based bank said in its letters, adding that it was making the decision โ€œto exit support operations.โ€

Wells Fargo has a large customer service center at 7711 Plantation Road. In 2023, it announced it would invest $87 million there and add 1,100 jobs.

Eligible employees will receive severance, and the company said it will offer career transition services through a third party, Lee Hecht Harrison.

The letters were sent to comply with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, or the WARN Act, which requires employers to provide advance notice of mass layoffs.
