William Fleming gave Princess Anne a stern test before Cavaliers pulled away for a 57-43 victory Friday night in a Virginia High School League Class 5 girls basketball semifinal at Norfolk State University.

The Colonels trailed 44-40 to begin the fourth quarter and had a chance to cut the deficit to two points with a pair of free throws. However, Princess Anne (27-0) outscored Fleming 13-3 to extend their three-year win streak to 70 games.

Princess Anne will play Menchville (25-1) for its 12th VHSL title in the last 13 years and its 16th overall on March 12. Menchville’s only loss was a 66-54 decision in December to VISAA Division I champion Bishop Ireton.

Abingdon’s girls qualified for their first state championship game with a 62-49 Class 3 semifinal victory on its home floor over Hopewell.

The Falcons (20-8) will play Skyline High of Front Royal at 6 p.m. on March 13 at VCU. Skyline also is making its first appearance in a state final.

Union will play Region B champion Clarke County, a 62-50 winner over Strasburg in its second state final at 12:30 p.m. March 13 at VCU. The Bears reached the 2016 Class 2A championship where they fell 51-48 to Ridgeview.
