Early voting is now underway in three special elections for the General Assembly set for Jan. 7, with the first weeekend hours for early voting coming this Saturday, Dec. 28.
Elections in two districts in Loudoun County and one from Appomattox County to western Hanover County were set in motion by the domino effect of two state legislators being elected to Congress in November.
State Sen. John McGuire, R-Goochland County, was elected to the 5th District seat in the U.S. House while state Sen. Suhas Subramanyam, D-Loudoun County, was elected to the 10th District seat. That opened up their state Senate seats. Del. Kannan Srinivasan, D-Loudoun County, won his party’s nomination nomination for that Northern Virginia Sente seat and resigned his House seat so a special election for that district could be scheduled at the same time.
Cardinal News has now launched its 2025 Voter Guide, which covers these three races. We’ve sent questionnaires to all the candidates. The candidates in McGuire’s former district, Republican Luther Cifers and Democrat Jack Trammell, have already responded and we’ve published their responses in the Voter Guide. We’ll add responses from the candidates in the other districts if and when we receive them.
You can also find a list of dates for early voting in the special election as well as maps of the three districts.
Once these special elections have passed, we’ll update the Voter Guide again to account for other elections coming up in 2025, starting with party primaries in June and then November elections in which Virginians will elect a governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, members of the House of Delegates and multiple local offices.
