Thirty VHSL spring sports team champions were crowned Saturday at 13 venues across the state and the Glenvar Highlanders captured two titles.
Glenvar swept the boys and girls Class 2 soccer championships at Salem’s Spartan Field as the boys completed an undefeated season with a 1-0 victory over Three Rivers District rival Radford, and the girls edged Clarke County 4-3 in penalty kicks after playing to a scoreless tie through overtime.
Elsewhere, Christiansburg won the Class 3 softball title with a 6-3 victory over Turner Ashby at Monticello High in Charlottesville.
Galax took the Class 1 boys soccer championship, defeating West Point 2-1, while Auburn won the Class 1 girls soccer title with a 6-2 victory over Northumberland at Roanoke College.
Rye Cove brought a championship home to Southwest Virginia with a 5-0 victory over Eastside in the Class 1 softball final at Botetourt Sports Complex.
Patrick Henry sophomore Ana Maria Rincon claimed her second successive Class 5 tennis title with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Riverside’s Maddie Tran at Huntington Park in Newport News.
Salem’s Drew Perez also got in the act in Newport News, rolling to a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Broad Run’s Neel Pasunuri to win the Class 4 boys title.
Richlands’ Jack Clem repeated his 2023 Class 2 boys championship with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Bruton’s Christoph Schweitzer.
Marion’s Parker White edged Radford’s Lydia Pratt 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (6) to take the Class 2 girls singles championship at Liberty University in Lynchburg.
Christiansburg’s Lucas Beasley (Class 4 boys), E.C. Glass’ Tovia Carothers (Class 4 girls), Abingdon’s Grayson Woodall (Class 3 girls) and Twin Springs’ Addy Bays (Class 1 girls) also finished as state tennis runners-up.
Lynchburg-area high schools went 0-for-3 in team finals as York defeated Liberty Christian 10-5 in Class 3 baseball, Woodgrove stopped Jefferson Forest 7-0 in Class 4 softball, and Charlottesville edged JF 2-1 in Class 4 boys soccer.
Rockbridge County’s bid for a Class 4 girls lacrosse final came up short in a 12-8 loss to Western Albemarle.

Boys and girls soccer teams from Western Albemarle and Glenvar high schools won semifinal games Friday to reach Saturday’s VHSL championships.
Schools from Central, Southside and Southwest Virginia will be well represented in state finals contested Saturday in five sports across nine venues.
Below is a quick summary:
Baseball: Liberty Christian will play York for the Class 3 title at Monticello High School in Charlottesville at 11 a.m. York ended Pulaski County’s run with an 11-6 semifinal victory.
Poquoson and Lebanon will meet for the Class 2 championship at Salem’s Kiwanis Field. Lebanon rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 4-3 win over King William. Poquoson stopped Dan River 2-1 in the other semifinal. The championship game is at 10 a.m.
In Class 1, Chilhowie kept its bid for a first state title alive with a 14-4 victory over Lancaster at Kiwanis Field. Rappahannock will be the Warriors’ opponent after handing Auburn only its second loss of the year, 3-0.
Softball: Jefferson Forest, Christiansburg, Randolph-Henry, Rye Cove and Eastside all reached Saturday’s championship games.
Jefferson Forest will take on Woodgrove in a Class 4 final in Crozet. Christiansburg meets Turner Ashby in Class 3 at Botetourt Sports Complex, while Randolph-Henry and King William tangle in Class 2. The complex also will feature a matchup of Cumberland District rivals when Rye Cove of Scott County plays Eastside of Wise County in the Class 1 final.
Girls lacrosse: Rockbridge County hopes to end Western Albemarle’s long win streak in the Class 4 final at Charlottesville High School.
Boys soccer: The Charlottesville area has three schools in finals: Albemarle vs. Frank Cox of Virginia Beach in Class 5, Charlottesville vs. Jefferson Forest in Class 4 and Western Albemarle vs. Lafayette in Class 3.
The Class 2 final at 12:30 p.m. at Spartan Field in Salem features Glenvar against Three Rivers District rival Radford. The 21-0 Highlanders have defeated the Bobcats three times this season. Perennial Class 1 power Galax plays West Point in the Class 1 final at 12:30 p.m. at Roanoke College.
Girls soccer: Western Albemarle and Brentsville will line up for the Class 3 crown. Glenvar takes on Clarke County in Class 2 at 10 a.m. at Spartan Field. Auburn will play Northumberland in the Class 1 final as the last Eagles spring sports team still in the hunt for a title.
Boys tennis: Salem’s Drew Perez and Christiansburg’s Lucas Beasley dueled on several occasions this spring. Now each can win a state singles title today.
Perez is in the Class 4 final in Newport News while Beasley goes for the Class 3 crown at Liberty University in Lynchburg. Also at Liberty, Richlands’ Jack Clem chases the Class 2 championship.
Girls tennis: Patrick Henry-Roanoke sophomore Ana Maria Rincon kept her bid for a second Class 5 singles title alive with a 6-3, 6-3 win Friday over Great Bridge’s Kayla Kennedy. Rincon will play for the title at Huntington Park in Newport News.
Rincon will have company as E.C. Glass fresham Tovia Carothers will go for the Class 4 singles championship.
At Liberty University, the busy singles schedule includes Abingdon’s Grayson Woodall vs. Western Albemarle’s Blythe Sturman in Class 3, Radford’s Lydia Pratt vs. Marion’s Parker White in Class 2, and Twin Springs’ Addy Bays vs. Rappahannock’s Sadie Packett in Class 1.
Pratt and Claire Fender of Radford defeated White and Maddie Austin 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (7) on Friday to win the Class 2 doubles title.

Marion’s girls tennis team needed little drama Thursday in winning the VHSL Class 2 tennis championship at Liberty University in Lynchburg.
The Scarlet Hurricanes dispatched Central-Woodstock with five singles victories for a 5-1 triumph. It came on the heels of Marion’s 5-2 victory over Poquoson for the 2023 championship.
Also at Liberty, Radford’s bid for the Class 2 boys tennis title ended with a 5-2 loss to Bruton High of Williamsburg.
George Wythe’s girls fell 5-0 to Rappahannock High of Warsaw in the Class 1 final.
In doubles play at Huntington Park in Newport News, the Patrick Henry-Roanoke duo of Ana Maria Rincon and Taylor Prillaman came up short 6-3, 6-2 in a Class 5 girls semifinal against Kayla Kennedy and Chase London of Chesapeake’s Great Bridge High.
Rincon will compete Friday against Kennedy in a singles semifinal. Rincon won the 2023 singles title as a freshman.
Freshman Tovia Carothers and Mary Kennedy of E.C. Glass reached the Class 4 girls doubles final with a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Marina Le and Allie France of Atlee.

Umpires, referees, public address announcers, concession workers, coaches and athletes across Virginia will be very busy today at high school sports events.
One hundred and thirteen — that’s 113 — Virginia High School League quarterfinal or semifinal team events are on the schedule as the prep season in baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer and tennis concludes this weekend with the crowning of 41 team champions and 22 tennis gold medalists at 13 venues.
Class 6 state finals are scheduled in the Richmond area for Deep Run High (baseball, softball, boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse) and Mills Godwin High (boys soccer, girls soccer); while the Class 5 finals are set for Richmond at Glen Allen High (baseball, softball, boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse and J.R. Tucker High (boys soccer, girls soccer).
Class 4 and Class 3 state finals move this year to the Charlottesville area. The Class 4 games are at Western Albemarle High (baseball, softball, boys soccer, girls soccer) and Charlottesville High (boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse), while the Class 3 finals are set for Monticello High (baseball, softball, boys soccer, girls soccer).
The Roanoke Valley is home to Class 2 and Class 1. Salem’s Kiwanis Field has Class 2 and Class 1 baseball, while the Botetourt Sports Complex is the site for Class 2 and Class 1 softball. Spartan Field in Salem has Class 2 boys soccer and girls soccer, while Roanoke College gets Class 1 boys soccer and girls soccer.
The remaining Class 6, Class 5 and Class 4 boys and girls tennis semifinals and finals will be played at Huntington Park in Newport News. Liberty University will hold the Class 3, Class 2 and Class 1 boys and girls tennis tournaments.
One hundred and fifty-two VHSL schools qualified at least one team in a spring sports state quarterfinal.
Riverside (Class 5), Atlee (Class 4) and Western Albemarle (Class 3) led the way with six teams.
Schools with five teams in quarterfinals: Battlefield (Class 6), Freedom-South Riding (Class 6), Glen Allen (Class 6), W.T. Woodson (Class 6) and Hanover (Class 4) all qualified five teams.
Schools with four teams in quarterfinals were Deep Run (Class 6), Hanover (Class 6), Independence (Class 5), Maury (Class 5), Menchville (Class 5), Midlothian (Class 5), Blacksburg (Class 4), Smithfield (Class 4), Lafayette (Class 3) and Auburn (Class 1).
