A soggy El Niño winter has washed the bright hues off the U.S. Drought Monitor map for Virginia but has only once painted white across a wide swath of our region.

Arctic chill with snow for many has given way to a damp mid-winter thaw in Southwest and Southside Virginia. Will winter come back?

Arctic chill and possibly another scrape with wintry precipitation await Southwest and Southside Virginia following complex Monday winter storm.

Some Southwest Virginia counties west of Interstate 77 may see 4 to 8 inches with lighter snow spreading over most of Southwest and Southside Virginia.

Another soaking storm similar to Tuesday’s is expected on Friday, but beyond that, the possibilities get more wintry for Southwest and Southside Virginia.

Some flooding and scattered power outages are possible as powerful low-pressure system moves northwest of the state.

Some parts of Southwest and Southside Virginia may get whitened and/or glazed on Saturday as wet weather pattern continues.

Atmospheric pattern changes to start 2024 may allow more for a cooler, wetter, and at least somewhat snowier winter than what started warm, dry 2023.

While Sunday’s strong coastal storm didn’t deliver heavy snowfall like its counterpart 14 years ago, it did help spin down some colder air and mountain snow squalls to interrupt the holiday mild period.
