Danville Public Schools Superintendent Angela Hairston will present a five-year strategic plan framework for the district to the school board at its regular meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
Hairston is seeking board approval of the plan before she provides an update to school stakeholders later this month.
The strategic plan encompasses the vision, mission and goal areas for the years 2026 to 2031, and it has been developed in partnership with the Virginia School Boards Association.
VSBA and the Danville school system have collaborated throughout the year, surveying teachers, students, staff and stakeholders and holding community meetings, according to a presentation included in the meeting’s agenda packet.
This work has led to a mission statement, vision statement, five belief statements and five goal areas.
The mission statement, according to the presentation, reads, “Danville Public Schools cultivate academic and social achievement in partnership with families and the community, preparing students to graduate ready for college, career or the workforce.”
The goal areas include:
- Student proficiency, achievement and acceleration
- Wellness, culture and climate
- Fiscal and operational management
- Family and community partnerships and engagement
- Communication
Additional details about each of these areas can be found in the presentation attached to the meeting agenda.
Hairston will present the plan at the end of the meeting, after a public comment period and several other presentations, including a presentation from Chief Academic Officer Takiwi Babalola about updated proficiency cut scores for SOLs.
Also at the meeting, the school board will vote on proclamations to designate school lunch week as Oct. 13-17 and school bus safety week at Oct. 20-24. The board will also recognize October as Disability Awareness Month and Bullying Prevention Month.
The meeting, held in the School Board Office at 341 Main St. in Danville, will be followed by a work session.
The school board meets twice a month, usually on the first and third Thursday. The next school board meeting is scheduled for Oct. 16.
There are no other meetings scheduled in Danville this week. In Pittsylvania County, the Staunton River Regional Industrial Facilities Authority met Monday.
