Third week of VHSL Rating Scale points show little change

The VHSL released its third set of prep football Rating Scale points with little change at the top.

The top spot in only two of the VHSL’s 24 regions changed hands this week as Kettle Run moved up to No. 1 in Region 3B after defeating previously unbeaten Sherando and Lord Botetourt climbed to No. 1 in Region 3D after its victory at William Byrd.

Stafford (Region 6B) and Glenvar (Region 2C) held on their respective No. 1 spots despite losing for the first time this season last week. Stafford and Lebanon also fell out of the unbeaten ranks.

After Saturday’s games, 32 VHSL teams remained undefeated, including seven each in Class 3 and Class 5, six in Class 2:

Class 6 — Oscar Smith (7-0), Battlefield (7-0), Hayfield (7-0), James Madison (7-0), Washington-Liberty (7-0).

Class 5 — Green Run (8-0), Warwick (8-0), Maury (7-0), Granby (7-0), King’s Fork (7-0), William Fleming (7-0), Matoaca (7-0).

Class 4 — Phoebus (7-0), Huguenot (7-0), John Champe (7-0).

Class 3 — Lafayette (7-0), Armstrong (7-0), Thomas Jefferson-Richmond (7-0), Kettle Run (7-0), Turner Ashby (7-0), Alleghany (7-0), Liberty Christian (6-0).

Class 2 — Bruton (7-0), Poquoson (7-0), Clarke County (7-0), Strasburg (7-0), Graham (7-0), Buckingham County (6-0).

Class 1 — Rappahannock (7-0), Altavista (7-0), Rye Cove (7-0), Bath County (6-0).

In other Rating scale notes:

*Will William Fleming follow Patrick Henry as the No. 1 seed in Region 5C? The Colonels are holding a slim lead over Matoaca with three weeks left in the regular season.

*Hayfield might be the favorite to win the Class 6 title, but the Hawks have the lowest rating of any of the four Class 6 region leaders. Hayfield sits atop Region 6C where the current No. 8 team has a worse rating than all 13 teams in Region 6B and 12 of the 13 teams in Region 6D.

VHSL Rating Scale points are used to determine qualification and seeding for region playoffs. Columns listed are for VHSL-recognized games played, points accumulated and average. Each team’s average at the conclusion of the regular season determines its position for the postseason. Games played against non-VHSL-recognized opponents do not factor into the ratings.
