The project joins 14 others around the state seeking to provide career training opportunities for elementary and high school students.

GO TEC, or Great Opportunities in Technology and Engineering Careers, gives kids access to high-tech equipment and training. It will launch in Southwest and Central Virginia and the greater Hampton Roads area.

The Martinsville center requested $175,000 for planning a K-12 STEM school. It’s the only lab school proposal the state has rejected so far.

A full application will be submitted this summer, and organizers plan to open the Southwest Virginia Healthcare Excellence Academy Laboratory School in the fall, with orientation and classes to start in January 2024.

Joe Sumner declined to talk about how he might approach the challenges that have faced NCI in recent years but said he plans to work with the community to address any issues.
