Hidden Valley’s boys and William Fleming’s girls enter Tuesday’s VHSL basketball quarterfinals with home games and high hopes.

But oh, what looms on the horizon.

The Titans and Colonels sport 21-4 records, each hoping to add a victory to the ledger and advance to a state semifinal.

Hidden Valley faces Region 3B runner-up Western Albemarle in a Class 3 quarterfinal at home Tuesday. If the Titans win, their semifinal assignment could be a difficult test. Opposite the Titans and Warriors sits powerhouse Petersburg, which is not the same Petersburg it was in 2025.

This year’s Petersburg team (19-4) is coached by Ty White, who coached John Marshall High of Richmond to seven VHSL championships before leaving for Petersburg after the 2024-25 season.

Three former John Marshall players, including 6-foot-8 McDonald’s All-American selection Latrell Almond, an Oklahoma State signee, joined White in moving to Petersburg.

Hidden Valley would be the home team in a state semifinal, either on its Roanoke County campus or at a neutral site. First, Petersburg has to get past a quarterfinal game against Meridian.

The Class 3 boys championship game is March 14 at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.

William Fleming’s girls team could be on another collision course with perennial Class 5 state champion Princess Anne High of Virginia Beach.

The Colonels play Tuesday quarterfinal at home against Massaponax (17-8). Princess Anne (25-0), which has won 11 of the last 12 Class 5 or Class 5A championships, including last March’s 70-28 victory over Fleming in the state final, sits near the Colonels in the same half of the bracket.

Princess Anne, which owns the VHSL girls record with 15 championships, faces King’s Fork High of Suffolk in its quarterfinal. A Fleming-Princess Anne rematch in the semifinals would take place in Virginia Beach.

The odds of winning a state title for many of the other teams from Central and Southwest Virginia appear more favorable.

Here are a few tipoffs:

Class 4 boys: E.C. Glass at Heritage-Leesburg. Both teams are 24-1 as Glass suffered its first loss in the Region 4D final to John Handley of Winchester. Another 24-1 team, Hampton, is also in Glass’ half of the bracket.

Class 3 boys: Christiansburg at Liberty Christian. LCA is on an eight-game win streak after claiming the Region 3C title as a No. 6 seed, including two last-second victories. Christiansburg is looking for its mojo after dropping three of its last five.

Class 2 boys: Graham at Floyd County. This is a rematch of last year’s semifinal that Graham won 62-61 on a shot by Markelle Ray with 3 seconds to play. This time, the G-Men have to play at Floyd, which used a win over Martinsville in the regular-season finale as a springboard to the Region 2C title.

Nelson County at Central-Wise. Nelson’s loss to Floyd County in the Region 2C final ended an 18-game win streak for the Governors. Central has been known for its girls program, but the Warriors rallied to win the Region 2D title after losing twice in the regular season to Graham and to Gate City in the Mountain District semifinals.

Because Class 2 and Class 1 do not cross over their brackets in the semifinals like the larger classifications, rematches of region finals are possible in the state semifinals.

Class 1 boys: Parry McCluer vs. Patrick Henry-Glade Spring, at Virginia H.S., Bristol. Two of the premier players in Class 1 are featured. Patrick Henry’s 6-foot-4 Cade Caywood scored 61 of his team’s 70 first-half points in a Region 1D win over Council and never played in the second half. Parry McCluer (22-4) is led by Langston Cook, who had 34 points in a 76-74 win over Fort Chiswell in the Region 1C final.

Twin Springs at Fort Chiswell. What else can be said about 6-foot-5 Fort Chiswell sophomore Owen Jackson? He eclipsed the 1,000-point barrier for his nascent career earlier this season and is averaging 33 points per game.

Class 4 girls: Woodgrove at Salem. The Spartans (25-1) reached the 2025 Class 4 state final before losing 46-37 to Heritage-Leesburg. Salem’s lone loss this season was to Gatlinburg-Pittman (Tenn.) in a holiday tournament in December. Woodgrove High of Purcellville (17-8) has played at Salem this year, but not against the Spartans. The Wolverines played in the Adam Ward Classic on Feb. 7, falling 59-33 to William Fleming.

Upheaval reigns in Class 4.

The Region 4A tournament is not finished. Manor High of Portsmouth, which self-reported a VHSL violation because of a clerical error that rendered one of its players ineligible, initially forfeited its region quarterfinal victory. However, Manor is back in the tournament after a judge ruled in favor of nine players who petitioned for the team’s reinstatement.

Meanwhile, Warhill High of Williamsburg played its way into the region final against Hampton and a berth in the state tournament. Or so Warhill thought. As of Monday afternoon’s court ruling that reinstated Manor, it is unclear how the Region will determine its champion and runner-up.

Class 3 girls: Western Albemarle at Abingdon. The Falcons (19-8) came to Roanoke County and captured the Region 3D title with a 51-48 victory over Staunton River at Northside High School. Abingdon is led by 6-foot-3 N.C. State signee Annsley Trivette.

Staunton River at Spotswood. Staunton River (21-5) has two losses to Fleming and one apiece to Salem, Abingdon and Western Albemarle. Spotswood (22-1) has won 22 games in a row since a season-opening loss to Miller School.

Class 2 girls: Ridgeview at Chatham. Chatham (26-0) and Princess Anne are the lone remaining undefeated teams in the VHSL. Ridgeview (21-5) comes from Dickenson County from the powerful Region 2D ranks, which have produced 10 of the last 12 Class 2 or Class 2A girls champs.

Liberty at Union. Liberty (13-10) is making its third consecutive trip to the quarterfinals, looking to crack the Region 2D puzzle. The girls from Bedford lost 65-47 at home to Ridgeview last year and fell 72-42 at Central-Wise in 2024. Union (15-8) swept Ridgeview and Central in the Region 2D tournament, avenging late regular-season losses to both.

Class 1 girls: George Wythe at Honaker. The defending Class 1 champs (21-5) play at Honaker, which won three successive VHSL titles from 2020-22. Until the loss to Galax in the Region 1C final, Wythe’s only losses were in succession to three larger Tennessee schools and Abingdon. Honaker (22-5) has averaged 23 wins over the last nine seasons, and that includes a 16-0 COVID-shortened year. Wythe defeated Honaker 34-31 last year in a state semifinal.

Grundy at Galax. This is the final season for Grundy (16-8), which is consolidating with three other Buchanan County schools to form Southern Gap High next fall. A 52-41 loss to Honaker in the Region 1D final has Grundy on the road. Galax (23-3) finally solved the George Wythe puzzle after three losses to the Maroons by a combined 41 points with a 76-68 victory in the Region 1C final.
