Election Day? OK. But we’re talking qualification for the Virginia High School League football playoffs, where the regular season concludes Nov. 7.
The VHSL is in its second full season of allowing each of its 24 regions to develop their own playoff system.
While most of the regions still use the traditional VHSL Rating Scale method of determining postseason qualifiers, a handful have adopted other methods.
Region 6C has adopted a mathematical formula based on a team’s winning percentage, its opponents’ winning percentage and the winning percentage of those opponents’ opponents.
Regions 6D, 4C and 1C base their qualification largely on teams’ finish within their respective districts, either using district record or the Rating Scale.
Four regions — 6A, 5D, 4C and 2B — allow only six teams into their bracket instead of the maximum of eight teams.
There are four weeks left in the regular season.
