Columbia Gas of Virginia plans to begin a new infrastructure upgrade project in Covington this month.
The utility company says that the work, which is scheduled to wrap up in March, will affect traffic on East Beech Street, East Chestnut Street, East Walnut Street, South Alleghany Avenue, South Highland Avenue, South Monroe Avenue, East Oak Street, East Pine Street, East Fudge Street and South Mercer Avenue.
Columbia Gas said in a news release that the project “will help ensure the continued delivery of safe, reliable and efficient natural gas in the area for years to come.”
Crews will work between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. and possibly on weekends.
Restoration work could include temporarily patching surfaces on public and private property, with permanent restoration to follow.
Columbia Gas asks drivers passing through work zones to slow down; watch for workers, signs and road flaggers; and expect changes in speed limits or traffic lanes.
The company also is upgrading infrastructure on Main Street in the city. That project initially was expected to be completed in October but now will likely be finished in November or early December, according to Columbia Gas spokesperson Stephanie Benson.
Columbia Gas serves 290,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in 98 cities, towns and counties throughout Virginia, including in the Lynchburg region, part of Southside, and Alleghany and Giles counties.
