Softball: Abingdon wins softball title, third state championship in girls sports it’s won this year.

 Updated June 13

Has the Abingdon High School athletics department been on your radar?

Did you catch that coming into the 2025-26 school year the Falcons had won 12 Virginia High School League state championships in the previous 11 seasons in seven different sports?

The radar was flashing all year as Abingdon added three more state titles this year.

And they are not mere blips.

The Falcons captured the Class 3 softball championship Saturday, adding the trophy to 2025-26 volleyball and girls basketball crowns to become the only program in VHSL history to sweep all three sports in the same school year.

Abingdon did it in style with a 7-3 victory on its home field over Broadway to finish the season as the lone unbeaten softball team in the VHSL at 29-0.

Since 2015 the tally for Abingdon now reads 15 VHSL championships in 10 sports (golf, girls tennis, boys cross country, girls cross country, boys indoor track, boys outdoor track, girls outdoor track, volleyball, girls basketball and softball).

Two Central Virginia schools played for softball titles Saturday at Moyer Sports Complex in Salem.

William Campbell took the Class 1 crown with a 10-4 victory over Buffalo Gap, while Appomattox County fell 14-4 to King William.

Other VHSL softball championships Saturday went to Grassfield (Class 6), Matoaca (Class 5) and Tuscarora (Class 4).

Baseball: Lebanon, PH-Glade Spring win titles

Updated June 13

Pitching was paramount Saturday at Salem’s Kiwanis Park as Lebanon (Class 2) and Patrick Henry-Glade Spring (Class 1) claimed VHSL championships.

PH-Glade Spring defeated Rappahannock 4-1 in the Class 1 final for its first state baseball title. The Washington County school survived an 11-inning marathon before defeating defending Class 1 champion Auburn in a state quarterfinal.

Lebanon ended Patrick County’s postseason run with a 5-2 victory in the Class 2 final. It was the third state title for Lebanon, following a Class 2 win in 2021 and a Class 1 championship in 2023. Lebanon prolonged its season by winning a Region 2D semifinal against Richlands that was halted in the seventh inning because of fog after the clock passed 2 a.m.

One day after Turner Ashby scored 20 runs in a Class 3 semifinal, New Kent held down the Knights for an 8-3 win in the title game at Abingdon High School.

The other VHSL baseball champions Saturday were Battlefield (Class 6), Great Bridge (Class 5) and Woodgrove (Class 4).

Softball: Abingdon one win away from three state titles this year in girls sports

Updated June 12

What does the report card look like for Virginia High School League volleyball, girls basketball and softball so far in the 2025-26 sports season?

All ‘A’s.

That’s because Abingdon is one softball victory away from sweeping all three Class 3 state championships.

The Falcons won the Class 3 volleyball title in November, followed by the girls basketball crown in March.

Saturday, Abingdon will go for the softball title and a perfect season when they face defending state champion Broadway. And because the VHSL awarded the Class 3 spring jubilee to Abingdon, the Falcons (29-0) will be playing on their home field.

Broadway advanced with a 1-0 shutout over Fauquier.

Abingdon’s lone previous trip to a state softball final was in 2010 when they Falcons fell to Northside 1-0 in eight innings.

Buffalo Gap ousted 2025 Class 1 state champ Eastside with a 4-2 victory at Moyer Sports Complex. The Bison will play William Campbell in the final. The Generals eliminated four-time champion Auburn 4-1 in the other semifinal.

Appomattox County outlasted Poquoson 10-8 in a Class 2 semifinal at Moyer. Appomattox will meet King William, a 5-0 winner over Richlands, in today’s championship game.

Elsewhere in VHSL softball finals Saturday, the lineup is James Madison vs. Grassfield (Class 6), Matoaca vs. Lightridge (Class 5) and Gloucester vs. Tuscarora (Class 4).

Baseball: PH-Glade Spring advances to first baseball state title game

 Updated June 12

Patrick County entered the 2026 Class 2 baseball state tournament with eight losses.

However, the Cougars have mastered the art of winning close games and Friday they posted their fourth one-run victory of the postseason. Moreover, it took nine innings before the team from Stuart scored a 3-2 win over Poquoson at Kiwanis Park.

The other semifinal between Lebanon and King William got a late start because of a thunderstorm. Lebanon rolled to an 11-3 victory and will face Patrick County at 1 p.m.

Earlier Friday at Kiwanis, Rappahannock and Patrick Henry-Glade Spring posted Class 1 semifinal triumphs.

Rappahannock ousted Chilhowie 5-3, while PH-Glade rolled to a 13-1 win over Riverheads in five innings.

It is PH-Glade Spring’s first baseball final in school history.

Jefferson Forest came up a run short in a Class 4 baseball semifinal with a 3-2 loss to Atlee at Woodgrove.

High in Loudoun County, Woodgrove took the other semifinal with a 4-3 win over Jamestown and will play for the title Saturday on its home field.

Other baseball finals Saturday will pit Battlefield vs. Independence (Class 6), Great Bridge vs. Glen Allen (Class 5) and New Kent vs. Turner Ashby (Class 3).

There will be a new Virginia High School League Class 1 baseball champion.

Patrick County eked out a 5-4 Class 2 quarterfinal win over John Battle at home, setting up Friday’s semifinal at Kiwanis Field against Poquoson in what will be a rematch of the Cougars’ 2023 state championship victory over the Bull Islanders.

Lebanon will face King William in the other Class 2 semifinal after the Pioneers took a 2-0 decision over Dan River.

Both western Virginia teams bowed out of the Class 3 bracket as Abingdon lost 7-6 on the road to Turner Ashby, while Spotswood came to Roanoke County and handed Hidden Valley an 11-1 setback. Both winners advance to the semifinals Friday at Abingdon High School.

Softball: Undefeated Abingdon marches on to semifinals

Updated June 9

Abingdon kept its undefeated season alive Tuesday with a 4-0 Class 3 quarterfinal victory at home against Rustburg.

The Falcons will have a chance to add the state softball title to 2025-26 championships in volleyball and girls basketball with a semifinal game and a potential state final on their home field.

Abingdon will face New Kent in a 10 a.m. semifinal on Friday.

Staunton River fell short in its bid to advance, falling 7-3 to Broadway in a road quarterfinal.

Auburn and defending champion Eastside rolled to Class 1 quarterfinal wins on their respective home fields. Auburn posted a 13-2 win over Honaker, while Eastside notched a 10-0 victory over George Wythe.

The semifinals Friday at Moyer Sports Complex in Salem will pit Auburn against William Campbell High of Naruna, and Eastside against Buffalo Gap High of Augusta County.

In Class 4, Jefferson Forest came up just short of a semifinal berth as Tuscarora High of Loudoun County posted a 6-5 triumph over the Cavaliers.

Richlands blanked Liberty of Bedford 4-0 in a Class 2 quarterfinal, while Appomattox County topped Lee with a 3-0 victory. Both teams will play in semifinals Friday at Moyer.
