Virginia Western foundation announces more than $160,000 in scholarships awarded
The Virginia Western Community College Educational Foundation announces that it awarded $160,762 in general scholarships to 107 students attending the fall 2022 semester at Virginia Western Community College.
The scholarship application for the spring 2023 semester is open until Oct. 31, 2022, at https://www.virginiawestern.edu/scholarships/.

NPR’s Mara Liasson to speak at Roanoke College
Mara Liasson, the national political correspondent for National Public Radio, will speak at Roanoke College on Nov. 2 as part of the Fowler Public Affairs Lecture Series.
The event will be at 7:30 p.m.
During her tenure she has covered seven presidential elections — in 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012. 2016, and 2020. Prior to her current assignment, Liasson was NPR’s White House correspondent for all eight years of the Clinton administration. She has won the White House Correspondents’ Association’s Merriman Smith Award for daily news coverage in 1994, 1995, and again in 1997.

Steve Forbes to speak at Roanoke College
Steve Forbes, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of Forbes Media,will speak at Roanoke College on Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. His talk is entitled: “The case for free enterprise over socialism.”
In both 1996 and 2000, Forbes campaigned for the Republican nomination for president.
Tickets are required, free of charge, and available at the Colket Information Desk beginning November 7.

FDA commissioner to speak in virtual talk at Fralin Institute
Robert Califf, commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), will speak in a virtual talk, “The Role of Translational Science in Addressing the Decline in Health Status in the U.S: A Perspective from the FDA,” at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3. Join via Zoom to hear the talk, which is being presented by the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC.
Califf, a cardiologist, served his first stint as FDA commissioner under President Barack Obama from 2016-17. He was appointed to the position again by President Joe Biden in early 2022. He has been a strong advocate for better clinical trials throughout his career.

Speaker set for next Mudd Lecture Series
Oscar Jerome Stewart, an assistant professor of management at the College of Charleston, will present a lecture on Nov. 3 at 5 p.m. in the Stackhouse Theater as part of Washington and Lee University’s Mudd Center for Ethics’ “Beneficence: Practicing an Ethics of Care” series.
Stewart’s lecture, which is free and open to the public, is titled “The Hidden Curricula of Competitive Individualism and its Roots in Business Education.” This event can also be accessed via Livestream.
Stewart’s research is centered around analyzing power within organizations, with an aim of understanding how to create more equitable and cooperative structures that bind members together in a sense of mutual care. He is currently applying this lens toward projects addressing corporate misconduct, discrimination in higher education and critical business pedagogy.
Before joining the College of Charleston’s School of Business, Stewart worked as an assistant professor of sustainable business at San Francisco State University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in finance and African American studies from the University of Minnesota and a doctorate from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte’s Interdisciplinary Organizational Science Program.

The Mudd Center was established in 2010 through a gift to Washington and Lee from award-winning journalist Roger Mudd, a 1950 graduate of the university. By facilitating collaboration across traditional institutional boundaries, the center aims to encourage a multidisciplinary perspective on ethics informed by both theory and practice. Previous Mudd Center lecture series topics have included Race and Justice in America, The Ethics of Citizenship, Markets and Morals, Equality and Difference, The Ethics of Identity and The Ethics of Technology.
