Amazon will launch two more utility-scale solar projects in Virginia, the company announced Wednesday.
A 200-megawatt project in Pittsylvania County, near Axton, and a 50-megawatt project in Frederick County will bring to 19 the number of utility-scale solar facilities the company has in Virginia, as shown on this interactive map. The company said additional details about the projects will be shared in the future.
Virginia has become a hotbed of solar activity in recent years, thanks to incentives for developers and localities, and to the growing commitment toward renewable energy by many large companies. Localities across the state have been wrestling with how — and even whether — to allow the continued spread of large-scale solar farms, which can take hundreds and even thousands of acres of farmland and forests.
Amazon, which has set a goal to power 100% of its operations with renewable energy by 2025, on Wednesday announced 37 new renewable energy projects around the world, brining the total to 310 across 19 countries. The Virginia projects power its data centers and also will supply power to its new HQ2 in Northern Virginia.
