A study published last year found that a majority of the city’s schools need complete renovations to function as productive learning sites. A recommendation to close two elementary schools will go before the Lynchburg School Board as early as next week.

The Youth Registered Apprenticeship Program, which is offered at more than 30 school divisions across the state, offers students training in fields ranging from machining and construction to dental assisting and culinary arts. 

School systems are now allowed to send meals home with kids during the summer instead of requiring students to come to school to eat. This past June, Henry County served a little over 58,000 meals. In June of last year, prior to the rule change, the team served 22,107.

A weeklong program hosted at Virginia Western Community College’s culinary arts facility is a community collaboration with plans to expand.

The president of the school’s board of visitors said this week that VMI will conduct its own review of whether the institute has interfered with the student newspaper. He earlier had said he had asked the state attorney general’s office to look into the matter.

The state military college has asked the attorney general’s office, which serves as its attorney, to step in after a petition called on VMI to support The Cadet, an independent publication.
