Saturday, March 9: Northside boys, Liberty Christian girls win
For the fourth time in five years, a VHSL Class 3 boys basketball championship has been won by a school from Roanoke County.
And for the second season in a row, the champion is the Northside Vikings.
Northside backed up its 2023 Class 3 crown Friday night in Richmond with a 73-58 victory over Lake Taylor High of Norfolk at VCU’s Siegel Center.
The Vikings (28-3) led 26-25 at halftime and pulled away in the second half, leading by as many as 16 points as the Titans never escaped a double-figure deficit. Northside canned 10 of 21 attempts from 3-point range while Lake Taylor went 0 for 10.
Junior wing MyKell Harvey led Northside with 27 points, while junior point guard Cy Hardy had 17 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals. Hardy keyed a third-quarter outburst when the Vikings outscored the Titans 28-18.
David Via added 13 points for Northside, which made 22 of 40 field goals.
Elijah Washington and Rodney Baines each had a double-double for Lake Taylor (25-2).
Washington scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Baines had 12 points and 10 boards.
Northside and veteran coach Bill Pope added the 2024 championship to titles the Vikings won in 2023 and 2019. Northside also was a state runner-up in 2017, 1995, 1992 and 1967.
Northside ended the season on a 13-game winning streak after losing a Blue Ridge District game to William Fleming. The Vikings’ other losses were to VISAA Division IV runner-up Carlisle and Rustburg.
In other championship games Friday:
CLASS 3 GIRLS
Liberty Christian 44, Meridian 43
Liberty Christian of Lynchburg completed a 27-0 season by overcoming an 11-point deficit for a victory over Meridian High of Falls Church in the Class 3 girls final.
Seniors Avery Mills and Emmy Stout scored all but five of the Bulldogs’ points.
Mills, a Liberty University signee, had 23 points while the 6-foot-2 Stout had 16 points with 23 rebounds including 14 off the offensive glass.
Meridian, formerly known as George Mason High, was playing in its third state final in four years. The Mustangs defeated Spotswood in 2021 and lost to Carroll County in 2022.
CLASS 4 BOYS
Hampton 66, Tuscarora 63
Hampton High thwarted a late comeback by Tuscarora High of Leesburg in the Class 4 boys championship for the first boys title since 2012.
The Crabbers (25-2) led by 15 points in the fourth quarter before Tuscarora eventually cut the deficit to 64-63. The Loudoun County team had a chance to tie in the final seconds but missed a 3-pointer.
Abraham Taft led three men in double figures for Hampton with 15 points. Gavin Kay added 14.
Jayden Johnson scored a game-high 28 for Tuscarora (25-4) while T.J. Duggan had 21 for the Huskies.
CLASS 4 GIRLS
Woodgrove 68, Hampton 58, OT
Woodgrove High of Purcellville prevented Hampton from sweeping both Class 4 crowns with a 68-58 win in the Class 3 girls final for its first championship. The Wolverines finished the season on a 16-game win streak following a 58-55 overtime loss to Desert Vista (Ariz.) High on Jan. 12.
Freshman Amaya Ramey had 26 points, including 11 in the third quarter, and 16 rebounds for Woodgrove (29-1).
Kaliya Perry led Hampton (23-4) with 19 points, while Dreyana Foster added 14.
SATURDAY FINALS
Class 6 girls: Manchester joined the list of first-time winners with a 51-42 victory over Thomas Dale in a showdown between Richmond-area schools. Manchester (27-2) achieved the crown after coming up three points shy against James Madison in last year’s state final. Thomas Dale finished 24-2 with its other loss coming to Manchester in the Region 6A final.
Class 6 boys: In an all-Northern Virginia matchup South Lakes High of Reston won its first state title with a commanding 65-39 verdict over Patriot High of Nokesville.
The victory by South Lakes (26-2) avenged an 83-72 loss to South Lakes in December.
Class 5 girls: Princess Anne High of Virginia Beach won its 14th state championship and its 10th in the last 11 years with an 80-70 victory over James River High of Midlothian. Princess Anne (25-2) lost this season only to Archbishop Carroll (D.C.) and Class 6 champion Manchester.
Class 5 boys: Woodside High of Newport News won for the second year in a row but this time there was no doubt. The Wolverines needed a last-second shot to defeat Patrick Henry-Roanoke in 2023, but Saturday they rolled to a 53-33 victory over L.C. Bird of Chesterfield.
It was Woodside’s second repeat title, having swept the Group AAA titles in 2004 and 2005. The Wolverines finished 27-1 with the only loss to VISAA member Trinity Catholic.
L.C. Bird, coached by former Patrick Henry star Troy Manns, finished 24-3.
Friday, March 8: Eastside and Central girls win
Two Wise County schools brought VHSL girls basketball state championships back to Wise County on Thursday, one in customary fashion and the other for the first time.
Central High of Wise, which was formed in 2011 with the consolidation of J.J. Kelly and Pound high schools, won the Class 2 championship at Richmond’s Siegel Center with a 58-41 victory over John Marshall High of Richmond.
It was the seventh state title in the last 11 years for Central (26-4) and head coach Robin Dotson, who also led J.J. Kelly to the Group A crown in 2002. Central previously won titles in 2022, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2015 and 2014 while finishing as the Class 2 runner-up in 2023.
Junior guard Emmah McAmis and senior forward Madison Looney combined for 43 points, outscoring John Marshall by themselves. The duo also made 18 of 20 free throws, accounting for the Warriors’ entire team total, as McAmis went 10 for 10.
McAmis finished with 27 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals to offset 15 turnovers against the Justices’ pressure defense. Looney, a UVa-Wise recruit, added 16 points and eight rebounds. Central used a 21-4 edge in the fourth quarter to open a big lead.
Kiyah Lewis scored 14 points to lead John Marshall, which missed all 12 of its 3-point attempts.
CLASS 1 GIRLS
Eastside 55, Brunswick 50
Eastside High was formed in 2013 from the consolidation of Coeburn and St. Paul high schools, so the Spartans have only 14 seasons of basketball history.
The school notched its first VHSL girls basketball championship with a triumph at VCU over Brunswick High of Lawrenceville, becoming the first Cumberland District girls program to claim a title since Rye Cove High in Scott County won the Group A trophy in 1987.
Eastside (22-8) broke free from a 34-all tie after three quarters as Taylor Clay scored eight of her 18 points in the fourth period. Clay also finished with seven rebounds and eight assists. Drew Damron had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Spartans, while B.J. Johnson added eight points and 11 rebounds.
Alexandria Harrison had game-high totals of 24 points, 13 rebounds and six blocked shots for Brunswick, which won a one-point semifinal at 2023 state runner-up Buffalo Gap to advance.
CLASS 1 BOYS
Lancaster 65, Auburn 59
Lancaster took its first lead of the game on a three-point play by junior Troy Henderson with 1 minute, 15 seconds to play and the Red Devils held on for their second successive Class 1 boys title at VCU.
Henderson finished with a game-high 30 points for Lancaster (25-2) while teammate Daveon Smith added 24. It was the third championship for the team from the Northern Neck with the first in 2018.
Auburn (23-7) won the 2022 title and was a co-champion in 2020 when COVID-19 canceled the state final. The even-year mystique came up short this time despite 28 points from senior guard Nick Millirons.
CLASS 2 BOYS
John Marshall 89, Virginia High 32
John Marshall of Richmond outscored Virginia High 34-9 in the third quarter and rolled to its third consecutive Class 2 boys title, its sixth championship in the last 11 years and 12th overall.
Ashaun Moore scored 18 points for the Justices (25-3), whose lineup included two 6-foot-9 players. Dominique Bailey and Aidan Argabright added 14 each for John Marshall, which has won its postseason games by an average of 54.8 points over the past three years.
Virginia High, which started just one player taller than 5 feet, 10 inches. was playing in its first state final since 1960. Deonta Mozell led the Bristol school with 20 points.
Saturday, March 2: Carlisle girls and New Covenant boys win VISAA titles
Carlisle School of Martinsville turned the VISAA Division III girls basketball tournament into a cakewalk as the Chiefs captured the state championship in the private-school league Saturday with a 69-31 victory over St. Margaret’s of Tappahannock at Richmond’s Steward School.
Carlisle won its three games in the state tournament by 39, 35 and 38 points in claiming the title.
New Covenant of Lynchburg won the Division IV boys title and stopped Carlisle’s bid for a double-gold Saturday with a 70-69 victory over the Chiefs in the final at Benedictine College Prep in Goochland County.
