Montgomery County supervisors will examine plans for paving several unpaved roads and will vote on zoning and land use changes at a business property when they meet Monday.
The county board will hold a closed meeting at 7 p.m. to discuss candidates for appointment to the planning commission. The regular meeting will convene at 7:15 p.m. in the second-floor board chambers at the county government center, 755 Roanoke St., Christiansburg.
Secondary road plan will get public comments
Supervisors will hold a joint public hearing with the Virginia Department of Transportation on the proposed secondary road six-year plan.
The draft priority list is:
- Taylor Hollow Road: Pave about four-tenths of a mile of road from the first bridge to a low-water structure.
- Willis Hollow Road: Pave road and improve drainage from about a half-mile from Virginia 637 to 1 mile past Virginia 637.
- Poff School Road: Pave road from Virginia 617 to about three-quarters of a mile west of 617.
- Bobcat Lane: Pave four-tenths of a mile of road and improve drainage, starting at the Glade Road intersection.
- Split Rail Road: Pave three-tenths of a mile of road.
Commercial property plan changes proposed
Supervisors will receive public comments and will vote on proposed changes to a rezoning and a special-use permit involving a business property on Harding Road near Blacksburg.
JJB Properties LLC owns the property. There is now a vehicle sales, service and rental business on the site. The owner wants master plan changes involving building and parking sites, along with eliminating a southern entry point closest to Harding Road, and preparing for establishment of a “contractor service business.”
According to planning documents, the applicant wants to build a professional office space behind the repair shop. It would house the applicant’s property management business and would include offices and storage space for maintenance equipment and materials for rental properties.
An illustration of the affected areas shows six proposed new buildings on the properties, which are zoned for general business and community business.
The applicant also wants to amend a 2019 special-use permit to allow mini-warehouses. The amendment would change the location of some planned buildings.
The county planning commission has recommended approval with these conditions:
- The applicant will install security fencing and security cameras and will use “dark sky friendly” lighting.
- Storage buildings must be of a neutral color and single-story, with exterior finishes similar to residential buildings, with no block or galvanized metal.
- Storage buildings can be no longer than 100 feet and must be at least 20 feet apart.
- Operating hours will be 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
During a March 11 planning commission hearing, two residents expressed concern about commercial development at the site, noting the rural, residential character of the area, according to planning documents.
Golf facility vote, honor for retiring sheriff are planned
Supervisors will vote on approving a supplemental appropriation of $62,700 from the Petrone Endowment to install a golf simulator center at Auburn High School, “serving as the flagship for year-round golf instruction,” according to a presentation document. The school board approved the proposal April 7.
Supervisors also will conduct a special presentation honoring Sheriff Hank Partin on his retirement. The resolution notes that Partin, who retired April 1, had served with the sheriff’s office since 1993 and had been sheriff since 2016. Prior to that, he served with the Christiansburg Police Department from 1988 to 1993. He also served with the Army National Guard and Army Reserve, including more than two years of active deployment in the Middle East.
