The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors will hold a joint public hearing with the Virginia Department of Transportation at 7 p.m. Tuesday to gather input on a plan to improve rural roads.

The VDOT Secondary Six-Year Plan lays out planned funding for construction and improvement to secondary roads over the next six years in localities across the state. It’s required by the state and updated annually. This proposed version includes funding for projects through the 2031-32 fiscal year.

The current version of the plan was approved in June and includes funding for projects through the 2030-31 fiscal year.

There are six new additions to the plan in this year’s proposed version.

Residents can share their thoughts at the meeting on the additions to the plan, which include funding for improvements on the following stretches of roads in the county by 2032:

  • 1 mile of Gap Road in Rondo
  • 0.68 mile of George Road in Brosville
  • 0.5 mile of Adams View Lane in Mt. Airy
  • 0.5 mile of Floyd Smith Road in Brosville
  • 0.3 mile of Steel Soring Place in Brosville
  • 0.2 mile of Davis Farm Road in Mt. Airy

At last year’s public hearing in May, Jay Craddock, assistant resident engineer for VDOT, said that the plan is “not a construction plan, but rather an allocation plan.”

“In other words, over the next six years, we will allocate money to the projects listed toward the construction of those roads,” Craddock said at the 2025 meeting.

A copy of the proposed plan can be reviewed at VDOT’s office in Chatham or at the Pittsylvania County Administration Building during normal business hours, according to a public notice

The public hearing will be held at the board’s meeting room in the school board office building at 39 Bank St. S.E. in Chatham.

The meeting will be preceded by a board of supervisors work session at 3 p.m.

Also meeting in Pittsylvania County this week is the Industrial Development Authority at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

In Danville, the city council will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a work session.
