Manor High School’s girls basketball team won in court. Saturday, the Mustangs did it on the court.
Salem High was on the wrong end of that verdict as Manor closed out a tumultuous postseason with a 43-40 victory over the Spartans to claim the school’s first state championship at VCU’s Siegel Center.
Center Leah Williams gave Manor (26-1) the lead for good at 41-40 with an inside move with 30 seconds to play.
Salem (27-2) missed a pair of free throws, then Kaliyah Eason and Ca’Asia Brown each hit one foul shot for Manor in the final seconds.
Salem’s Emme Custer scored Salem’s last six points and put the Spartans up 40-39 on a post move with 50 seconds left, but Manor got the ball inside to Williams for the big bucket.
Five-foot-two freshman guard Jha’Ziya Babb led Manor with 23 points including an 11-of-12 performance at the foul line. Brown added 11 points for the Mustangs. Manor’s free throw shooting overcame a 12-of-54 effort from the field.
Custer scored 20 points for Salem, while Bailey Rider added 11.
Manor’s victory avenged a 50-43 semifinal loss to Salem in a 2025 Class 4 semifinal.
Manor, a Portsmouth school formerly known as Woodrow Wilson, temporarily had its season end after it self-reported a VHSL violation for the use of an ineligible player in a Region 4A tournament game.
However, nine Manor players and their families received a favorable court ruling from a judge to overturn the forfeit, allowing the team to compete in the postseason. The Mustangs swept through six playoff foes to claim the trophy.
Woodrow Wilson High lost in the 2004 Group AAA championship game when the team was led by Roanoke native Khadijah Whittington, who transferred from William Fleming to the Portsmouth school after starring for the Colonels.
In other state finals Saturday:
Class 3 girls: Annsley Trivette scored 25 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field to lift Abingdon to its first basketball title in school history with a 58-38 decision over Skyline High of Front Royal.
The 6-foot-3 Trivette, a North Carolina State signee, also grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds to go with three assists, three blocked shots and two steals for the Falcons (21-8) who were playing in their first state final. Trivette also won the discus throw in the Class 3 state indoor track and field meet earlier this month.
Maddie Fields added 13 rebounds for Abingdon, which outrebounded Skyline 53-37. Lauren Baker led the Washington County team with eight assists.
Elizabeth Nichols hit a pair of 3-points and scored nine points for the Falcons, who led 30-21 at halftime and held Skyline scoreless in the fourth quarter.
Skyline (23-6) hit just 17 of 71 field goal attempts, 19.7 percent for the game. Camilla Diamond led the Hawks with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Skyline was also playing in its first state final.
Class 4 boys: Six-foot-six senior forward Christian Dinges led four John Handley players in double figures with 18 points and the team from Winchester captured the first boys state basketball title with a 61-42 victory over Hampton.
Isaiah Baxter added 14 points, while Jaevon Brisco and Will Braun-Druin had 13 apiece as Handley (24-5) committed just eight total turnovers against Hampton’s fullcourt pressure defense. Brisco nailed three of his six 3-point attempts as Handley was 7 of 15 behind the arc and 20 of 26 from the foul line.
The Judges also won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Crabbers 28-19 as Braun-Druin and Kyren Oglesby led the way with six apiece.
Abraham Taft led Hampton (26-2) with 14 points, while Joshua Rice added 13 against a Handley zone defense that slowed the pace and kept the Crabbers on the perimeter where they made just 4 of 20 3-pointers.
Handley led 24-18 at halftime and upped the lead to 37-27 after three quarters.
Hampton brought a 26-game win streak into the state final following a season-opening loss to Denbigh.
Class 3 boys: Kelvin Anderson scored 19 points and Latrell Allmond had 15 as Petersburg won its first title in 52 years with a 56-35 victory over Lake Taylor High of Norfolk.
The win gave first-year Petersburg coach Ty White his eighth overall VHSL championship, breaking the record of seven set by former Martinsville coach Husky Hall. Petersburg’s last titles came in 1973 and 1974 when the Crimson Wave was powered by future NBA legend Moses Malone.
Ladarius Givan had 12 rebounds for Petersburg (25-4), while freshman King Bacot had nine points.
Lake Taylor (21-6) was led in scoring by Jacarri Jones with 12 points and Shaquantay Evans with 11.
