Quick kicks from Virginia High School League football region finals from Friday and Saturday:
Two undefeated teams remain in the VHSL, and they will play each other Dec. 6 in a state semifinal.
Glenvar (13-0) will play at Union (13-0) in a Class 2 game at Bullitt Park in Big Stone Gap. The other semifinal sends Strasburg (11-1) to Poquoson (12-1) as the Class 2 matchups feature the four teams with the fewest combined losses of any classification.
Three previously undefeated teams including one 2024 state champion lost in region finals this weekend.
Rappahannock stopped defending champ Essex 19-16 in Region 1A in Tappahannock. Across the state in Coeburn, previously unbeaten Eastside fell to 32-12 to Rye Cove in Region 1D. Both games were rematches of regular-season games that Rappahannock and Rye Cove lost earlier this fall.
Also in Class 1, Buffalo Gap (7-6) ended a 19-game losing streak to Augusta County rival Riverheads in Region 1B. The loss by Riverheads ended a 30-game win streak in Class 1 playoff games.
Class 1 and Class 2 used the old VHSL Rating Scale model to determine which teams host semifinals. Rye Cove (10-3) will play at home against Grayson County (9-4) in a state semifinal for the second year in a row, while Buffalo Gap will go to Rappahannock (11-2).
None of the four Class 1 teams was seeded higher than No. 3 in its respective region. The four semifinalists have a combined 15 losses, the most of any classification.
The Class 3 semifinals are using a cross-bracketing format in 2025.
Next Saturday’s pairings send Magna Vista (12-1) from Ridgeway to Norfolk to face Lake Taylor (11-2). Two-time defending Class 3 champion Liberty Christian kept its hopes for a third consecutive title alive with a 14-7 overtime victory over Heritage-Lynchburg that avenged a regular-season loss. LCA (10-2) will make the trip from Lynchburg to Nokesville to play 2024 state runner-up Kettle Run (12-1). It will be LCA’s fourth postseason road game in 2025.
Class 4 is using the rating scale to seed its four teams and determine home field.
Jefferson Forest (11-2, 28.0 rating) will head to Richmond to face 2024 state champion and No. 1 seed Varina (11-2, 30.9). The other semi has Lafayette (12-1, 30.0) playing at Loudoun County (11-1, 30.0).
Class 5 and Class 6 adopted a cross-bracketing format with predetermined state semifinal hosts on a rotating basis in ensuing seasons.
In Class 5, reigning champion Maury (12-1) will travel from Norfolk to Loudoun County to take on Stone Bridge (11-1). Indian River (11-2) has a shorter trip from Chesapeake to the Richmond area to play Highland Springs (10-3).
Two previously unbeaten Class 5 teams — Green Run and Riverbend — saw their seasons end with region final losses.
The Class 6 semifinals include one team with four losses and another with three 2025 defeats. Both teams will play at home against teams with better records.
Defending Class 6 champion Oscar Smith (11-1) goes from Chesapeake to Vienna to play James Madison (9-4) in a rematch of the 2024 state final won 21-20 by the Tigers. The other semi sends West Springfield (11-2) to North Stafford (10-3).
The VHSL championship games are scheduled for Dec. 13 at three sites: Classes 5 and 6 and James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Classes 3 and 4 at Liberty University in Lynchburg and Classes 1 and 2 at Salem Stadium.
The Class 6, 4 and 2 finals are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. The Class 5, 3 and 1 finals are scheduled for 5 p.m.
