On Monday, the Roanoke City Council will meet in the afternoon and consider a number of appropriation requests brought forward by the Roanoke City School Board for programs that the federal government will reimburse.
Here are some of the largest monetary grants the division will receive, and what kind of programming they will be used for:
School-Based Mental Health grant
This federal grant for $150,000 will provide funding to increase the number of qualified school mental health professionals employed by local education agencies. The grant, according to the agenda report, will “help build capacity for managing the recruitment and retention efforts of school mental health professionals.”
Adult Basic Education Program Funding
This federal grant with a small local match, totaling $400,532.88, will provide funds for the education of adults who have not completed high school.

This federal funding of $3,976,730 provides aid for the education and guidance of students with disabilities.
Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education (CTE) Grant
This local grant for $465,025.45 provides funding to increase focus on career and technical education students and “strengthen connections between secondary and postsecondary education, and improve state and local accountability,” the agenda report reads.
Title II, Part A, Improving Teacher Quality grant
This federal funding, totaling $927,491.64, will be used to prepare, train and recruit high-quality teachers and principals “that are capable of ensuring all children are prepared to achieve high standards,” the agenda report says.
Title IV, Part A, Student Support and Academic Enrichment Federal Programs grant
This federal grant of $585,011.14 will be used to increase the capacity of the school division to provide all students with access to a well-rounded education, improve school conditions for learning and enhance the use of technology in the classroom.
School Support for Afghan Students (SSAS) Initiative grant
This federal grant of $315,271 provides services to eligible Afghan students and their parents under the School Support for Afghan Students Program. The agenda report says the grant aims to improve academic performance and integration for students and families.
School Instructional Technology Virginia Public School Authority (VPSA)
This program will provide $860,800 in state funds and a local match to support implementing the Standards of Learning (SOLs) Web-Based Technology Initiative. The goal is to establish a computer-based instructional and testing system for SOL testing and high-speed internet connectivity at all schools.
