The Dan River Region Health Collaborative is hosting an information session about the Transco pipeline at its monthly meeting in Danville on Thursday at noon.
The Transco pipeline, which carries natural gas, runs through the Chatham area of Pittsylvania County. In Virginia, it extends northeast from Pittsylvania, through Central Virginia and into Northern Virginia.
Owned by the Williams Companies, a natural gas pipeline developer, the pipeline is part of a larger system that extends more than 10,000 miles from the Gulf Coast to New York.
The Williams Companies proposed Southeast Supply Enhancement would extend the pipeline south, between Pittsylvania County and Alabama. It would include about 26 miles of new pipeline in Pittsylvania.
Last month’s Health Collaborative meeting was also partially focused on this topic. Jessica Sims with Appalachian Voices, a grassroots environmental protection group, gave a presentation about the Southeast Supply Enhancement.
This month, Michael Atchie, a representative from the Williams Companies, will be speaking about the expansion project.
The Williams Companies also plans a further extension of the existing pipeline in Virginia, running north from Pittsylvania. This expansion will serve “the power-hungry Virginia market,” Williams’ President and CEO Alan Armstrong said in May on a quarterly earnings call.
That expansion, called the Transco Power Express, is expected to carry 950 million cubic feet of gas to markets north of the Transco compressor station in Chatham.
The company projects the expansion to be operational by the third quarter of 2030, though neither a specific timeline nor map has been made public.
The Health Collaborative is an organization that works to promote the health and wellbeing of residents in the Dan River Region.
The organization serves Danville, Pittsylvania County and Caswell County, North Carolina, by providing resources, education and programming in a variety of health-related sectors like housing, environment and health care. It is made up of local residents and organizations and holds monthly chapter meetings in each of these localities.
The Thursday meeting will be held at First Baptist Church, 871 Main St. in Danville. It’s expected to run from noon to 1:30 p.m.
