Pittsylvania County has selected county treasurer Vincent Shorter to fill the position of county administrator, which has been open for over a year. Shorter served as interim administrator for 10 months.
The board of supervisors voted 6-1 to appoint Shorter to the position at a special meeting Thursday. Chatham-Blairs Supervisor Kenneth Bowman was the sole dissenter.
Stuart Turille Jr. resigned as county administrator in April 2024, less than a year into his tenure. The county hired a consultant in the fall to conduct a national search to fill the role.
Shorter worked as interim administrator on top of his existing role as county treasurer from July 1 to April 30. He has been treasurer since 2016.
He will resign from his position as treasurer when he starts as county administrator in July, according to a news release from the county. A circuit judge will appoint a replacement for the treasurer position and schedule a special election.
“What a wonderful day it is in Pittsylvania County that we filled the role of county administrator,” board chair Robert Tucker said in the release. “Mr. Vincent Shorter is a local guy, and he loves the County. He is very capable, very qualified, and he will bring his unique skill set to the table and help stabilize the County.”
Shorter said that he is particularly excited to continue economic development projects in the county.
“I’d love to see these all the way to the finish line,” he said in the release. “I’m excited about serving my home county in a different role.”
Shorter’s contract with the county extends until 2035. It can be renewed, amended or extended by mutual written agreement, the release said.
He will be paid an annual base salary of $220,000 and will be subject to cost-of-living adjustments, according to the release.
Shorter is a native of Pittsylvania County and lives in the town of Chatham.
He has a bachelor’s degree in computer science and criminal justice from Liberty University, a master governmental treasurer certification from the University of Virginia, and a Virginia government accounting certificate from Radford University.
