Members of the Industrial Development Authority will convene at noon Wednesday at the Commonwealth Centre for Advanced Training to discuss a project that would improve access to one of the region’s major industrial parks.
Known as the Reservoir Road Improvement Project, officials plan to improve parts of the road which lies near the border separating North Carolina from the Commonwealth. Specifically, authority members will discuss road easement and clarifying right-of-way conveyance.
Reservoir Road is in the proximity of Commonwealth Crossing Business Centre, a major industrial park that lies near the state border. It is home to the Commonwealth Centre for Advanced Training, a manufacturing training facility, and companies like Press Glass.
Officials want to add more industries to the site and improving the surrounding infrastructure is part of that effort, according to officials like Congressman Morgan Griffith, R-Salem.
“Improving Reservoir Road is important to the success of Commonwealth Crossing,” Griffith said, back in 2022 following the award of $1.2 million in funding to Reservoir Road improvements.
The $1.2 million funding package was courtesy of the Appalachian Regional Commission, a Congressional entity created to provide assistance to the Appalachian and adjacent regions.
ARC has offered funding for several projects, including part of a recently turned-down renovation of the Fieldale Recreation Center.
The 2022 grant was meant to cover the cost of renovating 3,500 feet of road.
