On Tuesday evening, a lively crowd listened to both candidates talk about their positions and experiences they’re bringing to their respective campaigns.

Lynchburg will have a new treasurer next year because Robert Bailey is stepping down.

The race between incumbent Cloe-Eva Barker and challenger Steven Gobble Jr. is the only local contested race in the city.

The power to appoint a new U.S. attorney belongs to the president of the United States, pending confirmation by the Senate. It’s unclear if President Donald Trump will break with that precedent or nominate Virginia’s two Democratic senators’ other pick for the seat.

Both events are free, but because space is limited, registration is required.

Pete Barlow, a former official with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, has announced his campaign to challenge Republican Rep. Ben Cline in the 2026 election. Ken Mitchell, who ran against Cline in 2024, is expected to enter the race as well.

Todd Gilbert, the former House of Delegates minority leader, left his role in the General Assembly and was sworn in as the interim U.S. attorney for the Western District of Virginia on July 14.

After much wrangling, the two candidates for governor have agreed to a debate in Norfolk, but neither has responded to an invitation to debate in Southwest Virginia.
