The Blacksburg Town Council will meet Tuesday to consider two housing projects that would add 320 apartments and seven townhomes.
The Yellow Sulphur project, located in southern Blacksburg at the former site of the Days Inn Hotel at 3503 Holiday Lane, would add five four-story apartment buildings totaling 320 units designed for non-student housing.
A project at 1709 and 1711 Whipple Drive would demolish a single-family home and build seven four-bedroom townhomes. The owners are requesting an exception for slightly fewer parking spaces than required by the town.
Blacksburg’s housing shortage has emerged as a key issue in the town’s mayoral and town council elections, and more housing proposals are expected to be voted on before the end of the year.
Tuesday’s agenda includes a public hearing on the Yellow Sulphur project. For the Whipple Drive project, the town council will vote to schedule a public hearing for Nov. 12 as part of its consent agenda, meaning there will not be a designated time on Tuesday for the public to comment on that project. The Blacksburg Planning Commission has recommended approval for the Whipple Drive project.
