The 5th Congressional District will have both a Democratic and Republican primary Aug. 4. It’s the only congressional district in Virginia that will have primaries to pick candidates for both major parties.

On the Republican side, incumbent John McGuire faces a challenge from Melanie Lucero. Democrats will choose between former Rep. Tom Perriello, Suzanne Krzyzanowski and Robert Tracinski for the nomination.

McGuire is one of two incumbents in Virginia to draw primary challengers; Democrat Don Beyer in the 8th District in Northern Virginia is the other.

Tuesday was the deadline for congressional candidates seeking party nominations to file. Both parties on Wednesday announced the list of candidates.

Three districts will have Republican primaries: the 5th, 7th and 10th.

Five districts will have Democratic primaries: the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 8th and 9th.

Aug. 4 will also see a statewide Republican primary to pick a U.S. Senate candidate as well as Democratic primaries for local offices in Arlington County (county board), Chesterfield County (board of supervisors), Harrisonburg (city council), Manassas (city council), Montgomery County (sheriff) and Roanoke (city council).

Early voting in those primaries begins June 18.

Independents still have until June 16 to file to get on the fall ballot. Here’s the full list of congressional candidates who have qualified for the ballot. Where only one candidate is listed, that candidate is the nominee and there is no need for a primary.

Cardinal News will now send an issue questionnaire to all these candidates and post the responses on our Voter Guide.

Two party-run nominating processes are also underway. Lynchburg Republicans will pick three candidates for city council on Saturday in a “firehouse primary” — see the story by Cardinal’s Emma Malinak on that. Montgomery County Republicans will use a similar process June 20 to pick a candidate for sheriff.
