April 9 marks the inaugural Local News Day.

Cardinal News is one of more than 1,300 newsrooms across the country today observing the first Local News Day.

Local News Day is a national day of action to reconnect people with trusted local news and empower newsrooms to grow, and is intended to spark a national movement that sustains local news for generations.

Since 2005, the U.S. has lost more than 2,500 newspapers and 60% of local reporters. Local News Day responds to this loss by spotlighting the essential role of local news and helping people find and support the outlets that keep their communities informed.

Many of the participating newsrooms were founded in the wake of legacy newspapers folding or severely curtailing coverage to ensure that people in their communities have a source of independent local news.

Some follow the nonprofit model of Cardinal News that asks those who can contribute to support local news. Others are for-profit with more traditional paid subscriptions and paywalls. From one-person operations to those with large newsrooms, each of the local news organizations is striving to keep communities informed so that people can have the knowledge they need to engage in civic life.

You can learn more and see all 1,337 participating newsrooms, 200 partners and 15 sponsors supporting Local News Day at localnewsday.org.

If you would like to help Cardinal News celebrate the day, talk about us or one of our stories to an acquaintance today. Suggest they sign up for one of our newsletters. And as always, if you can help financially support local news, we would be very grateful.
