The Battle of Great Bridge, in modern-day Chesapeake, was the first significant land battle in Viginia during the American Revolution. The American victory in December 1775 pushed the British back into Norfolk and eventually led to the destruction of that city on Jan. 1, 1776. (See our previous story on the battle.)
