Montgomery County supervisors will meet Monday night after a long Saturday work session (see below) to address a range of topics, including property tax payment penalties and the frequency of reassessments, the last fiscal year’s financial results and choosing board leadership for 2026.
The board will convene at 7:15 p.m. in the county government center, 755 Roanoke St., Christiansburg.
Supervisors will vote on a resolution to delay assessing penalties and interest for late payment of real estate and personal property taxes that were due Dec. 5. It notes that snow and ice that day “made travel not advisable.” The proposal is to impose no penalties or interest if taxes were paid by Dec. 8.
The board will also get a staff update on a proposal to move from property reassessments every four years to every two years. In November, Chief Financial Officer Terri Mitchell presented data supporting a change to biennial assessments “to improve uniformity of assessed values, reduce large fluctuations in property taxes, and aid in budgeting.”
Mitchell’s presentation noted that key considerations in making the change would include the costs of hiring and retaining more staff to do the work, transparency and the impact on taxpayers. She reported that more frequent assessments would improve uniformity in the valuation process, establish taxable values that are closer to market values and reduce “sticker shock” when property owners receive their new assessed values.
Other agenda items will include:
- The annual organizational meeting to choose a chair and vice chair.
- Presentation of the annual comprehensive financial report for fiscal 2024-25 by John Alridge of Brown, Edwards & Co.
- A vote on adding Teel Lane in Teel Park to the Virginia Department of Transportation’s secondary road system, along with a vote on asking VDOT to take Evergreen Trail and Buck Mountain Ridge in the Brush Mountain Estates into the secondary road system.
- A vote on distributing nearly $176,600 from the Virginia Department of Fire Programs to volunteer fire departments serving unincorporated sections of the county as follows: Blacksburg, more than $55,800; Christiansburg, more than $45,700; Elliston, roughly $35,000; Riner, nearly $33,000; and Longshop/McCoy, nearly $7,100.
- A vote on distributing nearly $44,700 to the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library, with the funds coming as donations earmarked for specific programs.
- Appointing supervisors as liaisons to the chamber of commerce, the school system, the parks and recreation commission, the planning commission, the library board, Virginia Tech and state legislators, along with positions on the agricultural and forestal district advisory board, the Montgomery Regional Economic Development Commission, the Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Fairview District Home Board, the transportation safety commission and the road viewers board.
