Danville City Council will consider an update to its zoning code at its regular meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. The city overhauled its comprehensive plan last year, and is now working to do the same for its zoning code, which hasn’t had a thorough update since 2004.
A public hearing will precede council’s vote on the zoning changes, which the city’s planning commission recommended for approval at its Nov. 12 meeting.
The zoning overhaul effort began in February and since then, the city has hosted over a dozen public outreach events to get feedback from the community about the proposed changes.
“The proposed changes are a direct result of the goals and objectives of the Comprehensive Plan set to address the changing needs of the City of Danville,” says the staff report in the meeting’s agenda packet.
The city has experienced tremendous change, growth and opportunity since 2004, the report says.
“It is vital that our development code changes with these opportunities to ensure that development occurs in a manner that is sustainable and effective without unnecessary hurdles,” it says.
Pittsylvania County is also undergoing a process to update its comprehensive plan and zoning code. Both localities have transformed economically since these documents were last updated.
Not only is the Danville zoning code document getting an update in content, it is also being revamped visually to be more user friendly, according to the staff report.
“The zoning code has been transformed from a word-heavy document to a document that uses graphics and charts to create a visual representation of the code,” it says.
The draft of the CODE Danville update project can be viewed here.
This draft version, which the council will consider, is not entirely complete, according to the staff report. Some articles are incomplete, and work will continue on these sections.

City staff recommends that the council adopt the proposed changes to the zoning code.
Also this week, the Pittsylvania County Planning Commission will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m., and the Pittsylvania Local Board of Social Services will meet Wednesday at 5:45 p.m.
