Challenger Ryan White has defeated incumbent Cheryl Facciani for the Windsor Hills seat on the Roanoke County School Board. The tally was updated Monday to include provisional ballots, which added to the slim lead White held on election night.

White received 49.95% of the vote, while Facciani received 49.11%. White won by 74 votes, according to the unofficial results posted on the Virginia Department of Elections website.

Just under 1% of votes went to write-in candidates.

Roanoke County’s electoral board will meet Friday to sign off on the results before sending them on to the state Board of Elections, which meets Nov. 17 to certify the results of the general election that took place Nov. 4.

White said by phone Monday that he was relieved the campaign season is over and that he is “hopeful that we can begin building bridges and moving forward for our public schools to make sure all of our students and teachers are supported.”

He said the school board has “so much work ahead of us” to improve the culture of the county school system and address bullying. “It’s such a big mountain to be climbing,” White said, adding that he can’t wait to get started.

Curbing bullying was one of the tenets of White’s campaign, which gained resonance after a 10-year-old county student died by suicide in spring 2025.

Facciani did not immediately respond to a phone message left Monday. White said he hasn’t heard from Facciani but has spoken with David Linden and Tim Greenway, who both won their reelection campaigns

Facciani was elected to the Windsor Hills seat in 2021.

Virginia allows for ballot recounts if the margin is 1 percentage point or less, but only pays for the recount if the margin is a half percentage point or less.
