The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing at its upcoming regular meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday to receive community input on the ongoing process to update the comprehensive plan.
County residents are invited to share feedback related to the project scope, community engagement and plan development process, according to a public notice.
Attached to the public notice, and available to view in person at the county administration building in Chatham, is an application from Charlottesville-based civil engineering firm Line and Grade to guide the comprehensive plan update.
At the meeting, a representative for Line and Grade will present an overview of the proposed scope of work and the process for developing an updated comprehensive plan, which is a 20- to 30-year vision for the locality.
Pittsylvania County’s comprehensive plan was last updated in 2010. Though it has been revisited every five years since its last update as mandated by the state, it hasn’t gotten a thorough overhaul.
The current plan doesn’t account for recent growth in the county, which has begun to see proposals for developments such as data centers and solar facilities.
Those kinds of projects weren’t on the county’s radar in 2010 when the plan was last updated, said former community development director Emily Ragsdale in a May interview.
An updated comprehensive plan will provide a better framework for board decisions on these sorts of developments, she said.
A comprehensive plan takes into account all pieces of a county’s operations: infrastructure, parks and recreation, housing, transportation, economic development.
Resident input during the public hearing will be taken into consideration before the board finalizes and awards the contract by early October, according to an August public notice.
The board of supervisors will hold a special meeting at 5 p.m., before its regular 7 p.m. meeting, involving a “closed session related to the contract negotiation for the comprehensive plan update project,” according to another public notice.
Also this week in Pittsylvania, the Local Board of Social Services meets at 5:45 p.m. Monday.
In Danville, the city council will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a work session, and the Board of Zoning Appeals will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday, followed by a work session.
