The Roanoke City Council will consider accepting Federal Emergency Management Agency Disaster Assistance Funds totaling an estimated $163,368 at its meeting Tuesday.

Hurricane Helene impacted Roanoke in the form of “high winds and heavy rain” in late September of last year, the agenda report says.

Though the impact was not as severe as it was in more southwestern parts of the state, Roanoke still qualified for aid through FEMA’s Public Assistance Program.

The program allows localities to recover up to 75% of the cost to protect people, mitigate damage and recover from the impact, agenda documents state.

Roanoke expects to receive $114,466 to reimburse funds used for debris removal and $26,544 for repairs to roads and bridges, among lesser totals for other reimbursements, according to the agenda report.

Tuesday’s 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. sessions will be held in the city council chambers, at 215 Church Ave. S.W. in Roanoke. Those who would like to read the full agenda can find it here. Those who cannot attend the meeting in person can livestream it on YouTube.
