On Monday, the Salem City Council will consider, on second reading, the rezoning of a 1-acre property on Butt Hollow Road that would allow for a youth wrestling practice facility in a construction yard.

The property is currently zoned as a business commerce district. The applicant, Jerry Cline, is looking to rezone the property as light manufacturing.

At a July 16 planning commission meeting, Cline told the commission that he intends to host more home services companies in the property and house a Salem nonprofit that teaches kids wrestling, which was looking for a place to expand. The commission unanimously recommended approval to the city council.

At its Aug. 11 meeting, the council approved the rezoning on first reading.

According to the agenda documents, the footprint of the building shouldn’t see any changes, and the space would be used on weekday evenings and weekends for practices.

School board appointment hearing set

The council will also consider setting a date for a public hearing to consider applicants for two Salem City School Board seats. The suggested date for the hearing is Oct. 14.

Salem is one of 12 localities in the commonwealth where school board members are appointed rather than elected.

On Dec. 31, the terms of Andy Raines and Stacey Danstrom will expire. State code requires the council to hold a public hearing to receive the views of residents at least seven days prior to any appointment.

The city will provide public notice of the meeting and request that interested candidates send letters of interest and resumes to the office of the clerk of council.

Those interested in reading the full agenda for Monday’s meeting can find it here. Monday’s meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall at 114 N. Broad St. in Salem.
