On Monday, the Salem City Council will consider purchasing a house at 216 Chapman St. for $72,500.
The property is in disrepair, said Salem communications director Mike Stevens. He said council members wish to purchase the house for “future residential use.”
“It’s unclear if renovation, new construction, or a combination of the two would be needed at this time,” he said.
The council will also consider the transfer of contingency funds to be used for the purchase. Stevens said contingency funds are built into the city’s General Fund and are available for “unforeseen expenses.”
Salem’s 2026 fiscal year budget lists about $1.5 million in total contingency funds.
Monday’s meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall, at 114 North Broad St. in Salem. Those interested in reading the full agenda for Monday’s meeting can find it here.
