Danville’s city council will consider its budget for city schools for the upcoming fiscal year at its regular meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The Danville Public Schools’ $121.9 million budget comes from a variety of sources, including federal, state and local funding. It’s about $9.3 million more than the budget for last fiscal year.

The school system is asking for about $34.3 million in local funding, with almost $32.5 million of that going towards support of operations and $1.8 million going toward debt service.

This is about $4.6 million more than the city contributed to the school system last fiscal year. The city’s proposed budget reflects this increase.

According to a release from Danville Public Schools, the budget increase reflects the city’s growth and identifies five priorities: improved achievement, safe school environments, support services for learning, improved facilities and investing in employees.

The proposed budget includes an 8% salary increase for teachers, a 4% salary increase for non-teaching employees and a $1,000 bonus for all employees.

City staff recommends that council approve this amount, according to the staff report in the meeting’s agenda packet.

There will be a public hearing on this item, which is on the agenda as a first reading, meaning that there will be no final vote until a later meeting.

The city is expected to approve the budget by May 20. After that, the school board will give it final approval at its June meeting.

At this meeting, council will also take a final vote on several items that could reduce utility costs to customers by using casino revenue.

It will also vote on two special use permits that, if approved, would allow a child care center and a child therapeutic practice in the city.

Also this week, the Pittsylvania County board of zoning appeals will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, and the Danville River District design commission will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday.
