Trust is the foundation of all health care relationships, and one tool can help you feel confident in the professionals you work with. The Department of Health Professions license lookup is an online database that lets users verify the credentials, licensing status and disciplinary history of health care workers, including doctors, nurses and pharmacists.

The tool can also help you choose a health care facility by letting you see who works there. Reviewing licensing histories, for example, can reveal employees who moved across state lines to evade penalties and were hired elsewhere.

Journalists sometimes use the license lookup to expose gaps in regulatory oversight. It can provide critical insights into health care regulations, ensuring transparency, strengthening public trust and informing the public about risks and systemic failures.

As a health reporter, I have used this tool to identify patterns of misconduct, track professionals with revoked or suspended licenses and hold regulatory bodies accountable for enforcing standards.
