Voters in Danville approved a 1% sales tax increase through a referendum in 2021. This increase is funding capital improvement and other projects at city schools, one of which the planning commission will consider at its Monday meeting.
The extra 1% in sales tax is expected to generate $141 million in revenue over the next 20 years, and it has already helped fund ongoing projects at George Washington High School, Langston School, Arnett Hills Elementary School and Forest Hills Elementary School.
These projects are focused on “21st century upgrades, increased technology access, and eliminating the need for trailer classrooms at the elementary level,” according to the staff report in the meeting’s agenda packet.
The planning commission will vote on special use permits for 13 locations that would allow a waiver of maximum signage. The item will then go to the city council for a final vote.
All 13 locations are zoned transitional office commercial, which has an upper limit of 24 square feet of sign area. This permit would allow signage of 95 square feet in these locations.
“The proposed waiver of maximum signage will allow the signage at each school to be uniform with an integrated LED message center,” says the staff report.
These signs will be used to provide information to students, parents and guardians.
“This information can vary from school calendars, school events or celebrations of accomplishments of students and staff,” the report says.
Staff recommends approval for this permit at all 13 locations.
