Mountain Gateway, UVa win final approval for lab schools

The state has given final approval to lab schools at Mountain Gateway Community College and the University of Virginia.

The Virginia Board of Education on Thursday approved both programs, which will be the fifth and sixth lab schools in the state, according to a news release from the governor’s office. Both had received preliminary approval earlier this month from a committee of the board.

The two lab schools will focus on STEM-related education for middle and high school students. The Mountain Gateway program will focus on information technology and will partner with public school divisions in Alleghany Highlands, Buena Vista, Bath County, Botetourt County and Rockbridge County. UVa’s lab school will focus on infusing STEM and computer science education, including data science, into school curricula. It will partner with Charlottesville City Public Schools and be embedded in Charlottesville Middle School.

Lab schools are designed to stimulate the development of innovative education programs for Virginia students from preschool through grade 12.

UVA Wise hosts screening of documentary ‘ᏓᏗᏬᏂᏏ (We Will Speak)’

An award-winning documentary depicting the fight to save the Cherokee language will be shown at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise on April 4.

The screening of the feature-length documentary “ᏓᏗᏬᏂᏏ (We Will Speak)” will be held at 7 p.m. in the C. Bascom Slemp Student Center on campus. A discussion with co-director Michael McDermit will follow the film.

The event is free and open to the public.

The film is centered around Cherokee activists and their race to save their language. In 2019, the Tri-Council of Cherokee tribes declared a state of emergency because fewer than 1,500 fluent speakers of the language remained, according to a news release announcing the screening.

Last year, “ᏓᏗᏬᏂᏏ (We Will Speak)” was named winner of the Hibulb Cultural Center Film Festival, best Oklahoma feature at the DeadCenter Film Festival and best documentary at Circle Cinema Film Festival.
